Working from home

2020 was a great year to be alive, considering the alternatives.

The pandemic had every production company and agency ripping up their in-house post production department, and desperately trying to work out how to edit films, deliver CGI, and worst of all have meetings remotely. Fortunately, there’s a network of film makers, editors, compositors, motion graphics artists, colourists and more, who’ve been working this way for years.

It started with the idea that if you’re working 18 hours straight on a deadline, it wouldn’t hurt to have a window in the suite. Maybe even some fresh air. A kitchen and a shower could help, and somewhere to relax and get inspired during three hour renders.

Those renders don’t take so long any more, even in 8k. But WFH still has its moments. Using DropBox Pro, Skype screen sharing, and FaceTime audio, you can work in different countries and feel like you’re in the same room. But like anything, it requires practice. So a good piece of advice would be to start twenty years ago. And when a pandemic comes along, you’ll have a strong network of collaborators, you’ll be on your third built-in suite at home, and everything will already work perfectly.
